Last season’s Melbourne jockey premiership winner Craig Williams has been handed a 10-meeting suspension for careless riding in race two at Sandown Lakeside on Sunday.
Williams was piloting Lindsay Park gelding Smart Elissim when he allowed that horse to shift in on top of Fighting Harada with around 200m to run in the 1200m event.
Fighting Harada, ridden by Michael Walker, found himself wedged between two runners when looking for a split, before recovering to finish second to Smart Elissim.
Walker fired in a protest after the race but stewards dismissed the objection, with the final winning margin three-quarters of a length.
Smart Elissim, who was backed from $ 1.90 into $ 1.70, has now won both of his career starts.
Williams’ suspension will see him miss Saturday’s G3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) at Flemington.
